Usually my Father’s Day dream begins with me lying in my lounge chair, relaxing in the warmth of the sun, cold gin and tonic faithfully by my side. The crackling sound of the barbeque as the hot dogs and cheeseburgers slowly cook is music to my ears. This year is a little different, though, certain circumstances have caused me to reassess my thoughts on Father’s Day. The deeper I thought, the more I wondered about what kind of legacy I am leaving behind for my children. Will they be able to withstand life’s ups and downs with dignity and resilience? I began to make a mental checklist of all the traits I pray they would have picked up along the way. Was I loving, kind, generous? I hope so. Have I shown them to be strong, fearless, and compassionate? Maybe. Did I set an example of being conscientious, hardworking, and loyal? Not sure. As I looked back at my past, I hoped I have given my children these gifts to have a healthy and happy life. I guess one can never be sure until you see your grown children looking back at you. Luckily, for me, they appeared to have been watching and listening behind my back. As one of my daughter’s always says, “The apple doesn’t fall far from the banana tree.” Oh well, they all cannot be geniuses, but humor works for me. too. I know she gets that from me! With certainty, I can truly say I am proud of the people they have become! Apples, bananas, at least they are both fruits.
